So the hot headline this month is that your data, your pictures, your privacy, your information, has been leaked to Cambridge Analytica, and this data was used to influence you into voting for Trump.
Just take a step back and read that headline for a moment, while also remembering that you saw presidential campaign videos on television as well, but we will let sleeping dogs lie.
Nothing is hidden on the Internet.
I’m not saying that this information is false, I just want you to audit what you do on a daily basis before you #DeleteFacebook. Facebook is a FREE platform that allows you to share your Life with everyone that is important to you. You are ok with showing the world the Crazy Night you just had, tagging your friends along with you, oh yea and you remembered to check into the place you were at, to the exact pinpoint address as well. While you were at that crazy night, you also maybe had to show the bartender your ID, which holds your Home Address, Full Name, Birth Date, and other relevant information about your life.
So you just showed a random person more information than Cambridge Analytica obtained from that big data breach. Just think about that for a moment as well.
Let’s talk about what data they DID get. They got:
• About me
• Education history
• Games activity
• Online presence
• Photo and video tags
• Relationship details
• Work history
A few will pop out like Location (where you check in whenever you have to show the world where you are), Hometown (If you put your actual residential city in your profile for the world to see), Birthday (Unavoidable since your friends say happy birthday to you anyway in your wall). So to be fair, it’s almost as much data as on your license, but Not Quite the Jackpot.
Besides that point, what exactly are they doing with this huge data breach? They are showing Advertisements to you that would Interest you. I bet you’d click on a Ad for “50% off Coach Bags” though and wouldn’t bat an eye.
Thats the problem with how society is viewing this scandal. It’s not a one way street. You constantly put your data on a FREE platform each and every day, showing your friends how cool you are and catching up with old friends and family, Liking certain content so that you keep up with the latest news on it, all leading up to making your life more Convenient. It would be a bitch to have to send snail mail to every single one of your friends with pictures you just developed from CVS of your party night now wouldn’t it be.
People are getting creeped out because they visit a companies website, and all of the sudden they are seeing Ads everywhere regarding that same store. This technique is nothing new! Your telling me you never went into a department store that Asked You for your zip code, and then All of the Sudden you started getting flyers the next month? Facebook is no different, when you made your profile they ASKED YOU for information and you DIDN’T have to give it to them! You choose to because you Want To. Because it’s CONVENIENT.
That’s the price you pay for Convenience. It’s really convenient that Google Maps just pulls up restaurants around you and knows how long it will take to get home when you Give Them your current location. It’s really convenient when Alexa can just reorder Pizza or an Amazon package without asking for your information again because you gave them your information.
If your going to #DeleteFacebook, then you would need to add these other hashtags to your post as well, and remember to check in again so people know your not home:
You couldn’t breathe for 24 hours without these tools so stop trying to shut down the Internet and face the facts already.
